How much is that song worth to you?

As per previous posts, it appears that the RIAA-inized DOJ is shaping up to be as expected...  In this latest case, the RIAA was awarded $80000 PER SONG presumably downloaded.

Since it is obvious that there will never be any form of real justice in these matters (how could there be when the plaintiff runs the DOJ), it appears that we only have one solution left to us.  We have to boycott any and all music labels associated with the RIAA.

"What?" you say. "How will I listen to music if I boycott them?"

Well Jimmy, it's like this.  The RIAA is going to bust down your door, destroy your computer, steal everything you own and then sue you -- even if you have never downloaded any music or even own a computer... The only way to stop that would be for them to go out of business.  As long as they are getting money from us, they will use that money to totally screw the public.  So instead of listening to music owned and controlled by Obama's Evil Overlords of the DOJ, you need to start listening to indie music... or maybe even start your own indie band.  Have you heard of Indaba Music?  Maybe you could try that.

According to Wikipedia, you need to boycott these labels:

The mystery of crop circles... has been solved...

A coworker sent me this story... here's a quick snippet...

THE mystery of crop circles in poppy fields in Australia's southern island state of Tasmania has been solved - stoned wallabies are eating the poppy heads and hopping around in circles.

WiTricity

I was browsing around today and came across WiTricity.  Using magnetic resonance, they are looking at charging devices remotely; no batteries and no power cables.  While things such as laptops and cell phones obviously come to mind; I think it might also be a good area of research for the Zeitgeist Movement...  having those embedded in the homes, walkways, etc might provide better options -- and getting rid of the chemical batteries definitely sounds like a green idea.

Unique web interface: Schematic

I came across Schematic today.  If you are wondering how I came about it, it is because Dale Herigstad (Chief Creative Officer) helped designed the interface for Minority Report [which I was investigating for use with the Epoc].

Google Fusion Tables

I was looking around some of the recent Google Labs products and came across their Fusion Tables project.

In this example, I opened an email from the Title Company, clicked on "Open as a Google Spreadsheet", then saved the result.  In Fusion Tables, I told it to open that document, clicked on Visualize, clicked on Map.... and this was the result...

You can try it out yourself. Click on the image to see the data, then choose Visualize from the menu.  It would have been nice if it let me embed the google map directly.

I was curious when my headset was going to arrive, so I emailed them. In case any of the rest of you are wondering, notice the highlighted bit from their response.
Dear Malachi,

Thank you for licensing the Emotiv SDK.

Licensing of the Emotiv SDK

As a developer or researcher, the process for licensing the Standard Edition of the Emotiv SDK is as follows:

1. Select the Emotiv SDK and click on the "Buy Now" button.

2. Provide us with your shipping address. Our worldwide shipping rate for the SDK headset is $24.95. The SDK headset can be shipped to an address other than your billing address.

3. Follow the checkout process with PayPal to complete your order.

4. Once payment is successfully processed, the Emotiv SDK will be available for immediate download. An order confirmation email will be sent to you providing you with your unique order number and serial key, required for installation of the Emotiv SDK.

The Emotiv SDK is a proprietary software toolkit that exposes the Emotiv APIs and detection libraries. It includes EmotivControlPanel.exe, EmoComposer.exe, EmoKey.exe, header files and import libraries, and sample code. The EmoComposer & EmoKey is a hardware emulator that will enable you to commence immediate development for the headset.

5. The SDK headset will ship approximately 10 weeks later to enable you to fully test your application.

When we charge your account, we will charge you for the price of the product, any applicable taxes and shipping to the address provided at the time of order.

Please note that Emotiv does not offer refunds on Electronic Software Downloads. Click here for our Returns & Refunds Policy.

We will send you a tracking number in due course.

Obama and the Future

Since Obama has proven time and again that he is on the take, I thought we'd take a walk down what unfortunately could be the future under Obama...

  • Obama puts the RIAA in charge of the DOJ [done]
  • Obama puts Phillip Morris in charge of the FDA [done] in the guise of protecting children
  • Obama puts the Business Software Alliance in charge of public standards under the guise of interoperability
  • Obama puts Patricia Dunn in charge of Privacy Policy
  • Obama puts Diebold in charge of the Treasury Department
Shall I go on? Ok, so he probably won't do that stuff... right?

13 June 2009

H.R. 1256

So it used to be that most places prevented me from smoking cloves.  Then legislation went through so that no one could smoke indoors.  And now Obama is trying to prevent me from smoking cloves at all.  Since it is obvious that our government has given up all pretense of freedom, I guess it is time we give up pretense of caring what they think...

So if anyone knows of any speakeasy opening up, let me know.

Some of you are probably aware that PGE is going around replacing the meters on the houses with the SmartMeters.  I got mine replaced the other day and contacted them to find out how to access the SmartMeters' page. Here's their response.
Good afternoon Malachi,

Thank you for using PGE's online account services.  I am sorry, but the new meters' website is not yet available.  All of the meters have to be installed in our service territory, and the final testing done, before the information will be available.  This will probably not be until 2010 or 2011.

If you like, you can take readings yourself at intervals and at the same times during the day or week to build a data base of your usage.

If we can assist you further, please e-mail us at Customer.Service@pgn.com.

Sincerely,
Wilda
PGE Customer Service

What's your Local Apparent Sidereal Time?

Step 1. Go to Google Maps and locate your house.
Step 2. Center it in the map.
Step 3. In your browser's location bar paste in:
javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));
Step 4. Copy the info in the popup dialog [for example: (45.483254, -122.838127)]
Step 5. Go to this page.
Step 6. In the second section ("Decimal Degrees to Degrees Minutes Seconds") type in the decimal (latitude, longitude) you got from Step 4.
Step 7. Click compute and copy the longitude from the bottom right box [for example: -122° 50' 17.2572"]
Step 8. Go to this page.
Step 9. Enter the values in the first 3 boxes [for example: 122 degrees, 50 minutes, 17 seconds]. Leave off decimal fractions and negative signs.
Step 10. If your value in #7 started with a negative, selected West. Otherwise select East. [in this example, I choose West]
Step 11. Click compute
Step 12. There you have it. Your Local Apparent Sidereal Time.  In my case, it was 04:02:03.4 LST.

Oh wait, you are wondering wtf LST is? Glad you asked.

Thanks to qmchenry for providing Steps 1-4, FCC for the longitude converter, the US Naval Observatory for the Sidereal converter and to Wikipedia for the graphic.

JDK fixed

It appears that the earlier reported JDK update isn't going to require money after all. Now we can all sleep peacefully at night until they decide to try the next marketing ploy.

Googling yourself and finding the darndest things

So as this contract comes to an end, I find myself needing to update my resume yet again.  One of my coworkers suggested adding an Open Source Projects section to my resume.  I started looking on Google to see if I could find anything that would tell me when I did this or that...

It's amazing how useful cache's could be... Here's a couple choice excerpts I found:

Sensics piSight™ HMD

Now that my Emotiv EPOC is on order, it's time to go for the other half of the equation... I've been wanting the Sensics piSight HMD for 3 years now and I think it would make an excellent addition to the EPOC.

Here's the current stats from their product page:
Panoramic field of view (82° to 180°, depending on model) provides situational awareness, active peripheral vision and enhanced realism
High resolution: Most models offer better than HD 1080p resolution, with up to 4200x2400 full-color pixels per eye
A balanced design that is comfortable and stays cool.
Over 30 models to choose from, offering the perfect fit for most performance and budget requirements
When I talked with Jim Bradford 2 years ago, the stats were a bit different.
It costs $30k+; half down rest in 3 months
Recommended 3 PNY (nVidia) FX4500 [X2 means 4 outputs]
which would drive the 12 screens (if outputs in 2400x600 mode)

Now it seems that it can be driven from 1 or 2 DVI inputs. I'll need to check back with Jim to see if I can get an upgraded recommendation on video cards and costs.

News from the Net

I know some of you (ahem Will) are disappointed that I have not done a News from the Net in awhile... so without further ado....

A study comes out showing (as all the anti-authoritarian members of my generation would already assume) that DRM encourages copyright violations.

It appears that Oracle has already started screwing over the Java platform. Where it had been completely free before -- they are now installing features that you can't use without paying for them. Of course, the biweekly OpenSolaris updates have ceased since the acquisition as well....

The infamous L0phtCrack is one again being revived by the original developers...

They are now using software to recreate musical instruments that no one has ever seen.

The team that made Google Maps is coming out with a new product, Google Wave. The basic idea behind it is a p2p collaborative environment. The platform itself also has a very interesting license. Although currently of no use to me, I also ran across Google Radio Automation. Google Docs now supports .xslx and .docx. Now something that does have some potential uses for me -- Google Scripts -- supporting server side scripting! There was also Google Site Search, but as Google is hosting all my stuff, I don't think I really need it.

M$ is taking a stab at fixing the Wii Couch Bowlers with a controller-less sensor bar.

For those of you that haven't seen Alice yet [not the game], you should watch the video on the bottom. Definitely better than the LOGO they taught us in elementary school.

How about a clean 1959 Lincoln Continental?

On the Java front, JDK7 has added a new NIO-based File I/O library and a SDP library (Sockets Direct Protocol).

Some cool new memory techniques would allow storing 1TB per square inch (nanoparticles in a nanotube)...

Wolfram Alpha vs Google search result comparison. More Alpha tests. Or try it yourself.

As expected, the US Military is preparing for the next fake attack.

The courts have decided that looking at something inappropriate counts as a crime... so if your boss decided checking your email from work was against company policy, expect to be imprisoned for hacking.

Some updates to the invisibility cloak. Now instead of not being there, you can be someone else ;)

Bloomsbury plans to start providing science books for free.

We all know the concept of 'if anything happens to me, this will be released to the media'... Well, someone did it - with a video posted to youtube upon his death.

Perhaps you'd like some additional senses? Like orientation-awareness? Kinda makes me wonder if that could be used for giving us elf-like abilities so we can build a DreamPark.

A gift for the real geek... how about installing anti-virus software with the interface all in Klingon? Or set them up with some face recognition software that works on videos... Or anything from the recent DARPA project list. Of course, the Espresso Book Machine was finally released - so if you are getting something for me, you can get me that.

How about Project Kenai? Per their page:
Sun Microsystem's onramp for the developer cloud experience of tomorrow, where you can host your open source projects and code, as well as find and collaborate with developers of like mind.
One of the projects on Kenai is how to do ZFS snapshots to the Amazon S3 cloud. Too bad Amazon charges more than Rumpelstiltskin.

In case you missed the terrible news last month, Wardenclyffe is being sold as well :(
