PhysOrg: Scientists Demonstrate First Silicon Laser

Although they have now made a silicon laser (which in itself is really kewl), I am wondering if it is already outdated since they are now moving away from silicon (to nanite?). The article mentions that it is important because silicon is the bread-n-butter of the industry, but less than a week ago they were talking about using nanite-replacements for CMOS.
