King vs. California King

So I was browsing today, and remembered that someone recently was arguing with me (yet again) about the difference between a King and a California King.  I don't remember who it was, but since it comes up all the time, thought I would share the facts with whoever is interested.

From the argument, I had thought that the California King was a rotated King; they had thought the California King was longer but the same width. It appears we were both wrong.

  • King:
    • width: 76"
    • height: 80"
    • also known as: Standard King
    • also known as: Eastern King
  • California King:
    • width: 72"
    • height: 84"
    • also known as: Western King

So, the King is 4" wider and the California King is 4" longer. If you multiple width*height, you will also see that the King is technically larger (more square inches) that the California King because of the fact that it is narrower. It doesn't seem that way, because the California King is longer.

That's fine, I don't mind missing 4" on the sides if I get to add it to the bottom.
and it's me you argue with, I was commenting that it's longer than a standard king, but if they are hacking out 4" from the sides than I was wrong as well.
or Simms, I had the argument with him as well.

Does this mean we have to get a new bed?

Yeah, custom made. We need one 76" wide and 84" long :) We'll call it a Biggie King :)

I happen to own 2 California King beds.  They are wider than a queen but narrower than a standard king.  They are nice and long so Jed's and my feet don't hang off the ends.  I highly recommend them!  :-)

I actually find that I purposely hang my feet over the end. After having them run over as a kid, I don't like a lot of pressure on my toes. But just the feet -- still have the bed support my ankles.

As a side note, the Standard King is still almost 6'8" long (as opposed to 7' for the California King) -- I didn't think either of you were over 6'8".

I have a Cal. King since my hubby is 6'5''. Really any extra legnth is a savior, if he wants to have bed above his head, and below his feet. The width is no problem though we reguarly have Chris, Amelia, and I all in the bed with no problem. I don't care personally, I can sleep on the bed horizontally with no problem.

Some current political news

First, there is an article over at the Washington Post: As Elections Near, Officials Challenge Balloting Security where some election officials are purposely hacking the results to test it.

Second, an article at the EFF: New Senate Broadcast Flag Bill Would Freeze Fair Use. This one is a little scary. From the article:

Well, that's not what the entertainment industry has in mind. According to them, here's all tomorrow's innovators should be allowed to offer you:

"customary historic use of broadcast content by consumers to the extent such use is consistent with applicable law."

Had that been the law in 1970, there would never have been a VCR. Had it been the law in 1990, no TiVo. In 2000, no iPod.

Jake

I was looking through my email to find birthdays to add to my calendar, and I came across one of my conversations with Jake.  Nothing really big in it, but... I have decided to post the thread here.

Hey there!   Family / Friends

How are things going?  Where are you at right now?

Things are going... well.. interesting here... I quit my job because I
am starting another year contract at Intel.  However, this time, EOTI
is my employer!  EOTI is actually going to be making some money above
and beyond my own wage!

Dino and I actually just got home. I thought I would send you a quick
hello before hanging out with her.

..>No problem.  Glad you like it.

How are things going?

We hung out with Elaine for her birthday yesterday.  She has decided
not to go to the middle east on the study abroad.  Instead she is
going to try to graduate next summer (next year) then go to school in
DC.

I start my new job on Monday. A bit nervous -- I am not actually
convinced that I qualify -- but I had to take the chance that this
might help us attain our goals.

Dino's still working at the law firm. They gave her another raise, so
she is now making $9.25/hr.  She doesn't seem as worried about loosing
her job now, but I think she is getting bored.  We're hoping to be
able to get her back into school once we get caught up on bills.

Haven't really talked to anyone else lately, so not sure how everyone
else is doing.

..>Yeah, I quit my job Thursday because I am going back to Intel for a
year starting monday.  The good news is, EOTI will be my employer and
contracting me out -- which means (before benefits and taxes) that
EOTI will be making $19/hr on my work AFTER my wages are paid.  I am
really hoping that this will give us a chance to finally get EOTI off
the ground.

Mal

PS> Sorry middle east is so boring. Perhaps you could build a sand castle ;)

Started my new job today. No clue how it is going to be yet though, as
I won't have my work computer until tomorrow afternoon.

so, you have like 15 months left right? have you decided what you are
going to do when you get back?

what is your physical address and phone number now?

Take care of yourself,

I am currently doing a contract where EOTI gets a portion of my wages... I am going to see if I can help Dino and Chris get a job as well, as they both lost their jobs.  Mostly, just trying to get EOTI some funds so that we can start doing our other plans.

Can't wait till you get back... About 1 year now, right?

Yeah, I understand. Sorry to say it, but I kinda expect the same.  My uncle was constantly coming out of retirement.  Wish there was a way to show them that it was in their best interest to let you go.

Honestly, right now they probably assume every able body is in their best interest.
Unless there were some way they would benefit from you being here (as opposed to you getting dishonorable discharge).

Hardware issues

As some of you know, I have been having some hardware issues. The workstation keeps rebooting and the server won't install any OS.

One of the tests I ran on the server appear to indicate memory failures. I ran memtest86 and in fact it was showing memory errors. This is $800 of new memory (1/2 per machine) so very questionable.

I contacted Kingston. They said that there is two possible scenarios that they can think of (either of which they would RMA the memory):

1) one of the chips is bad

2) one of the chips refuses to clock back to DDR333

Evidentally, with my Asus board, they have found that having over 2GB of memory causes an overheat in the memory controller... not only could this be causing the errors I am seeing on the server; but possibly also the rebooting of the workstation.

Which means that sometime this weekend I have to open up the server, and test each memory chip by itself. That is going to be a little difficult and time consuming... but maybe we will finally get it working (after 6 months).

Thats it! Fuck Kingston memory! :-P

No, I am OK with Kingston. Got through to tech support quickly (and free); they were knowledgeable and are willing to replace the memory. I am pretty sure it has lifetime warranty against defects.

I'm just kinda stupid for trusting the bios and not testing it earlier.

Kingston, Lifetime Warranty.

Simpletech, Lifetime Warranty.

only memory I buy. only I prefer simple...

Well, we bought the ONLY model that Asus supported having 4GB of. Any other brand and they only supported 3GB.
