More Net News

It looks like the Senate has finally started listening. We'll have to keep a close eye on this one.

I don't play World of Warcraft, but for those of you who do, this might be kewl, if a little slow.

Though few of you probably have Dutch passports, this is likely to give you an idea of what could go wrong with the biometric IDs in general, which as I understand it, the upcoming government-required RealID will be.

Some recent research on autism.

Another reason not to lie has been developed. Wonder if it will work on people who (for mental stability issues) actually believe what they are saying.

Ok, here's an interesting one. The courts have decided that burning pornographic content onto CD-R constitutes making pornography. While for some people (Jason?) this might mean you have to answer Yes instead of No on some questionaires, there might be more far reaching implications. They stated that because he burned it to CD-R, he actually made something that didn't previously exist.  Technically then, if I burn some random MP3s onto a CD, aren't I also creating something that never existed -- thus not breaking the law since I can't be breaking copyright laws if they are decided that it is my original art.  Let's take it another direction, does this mean that downloading/burning something like the Anarchist' Cookbook or the Communist Manifesto makes you an Anarchist or Communist?

And some US Politics reported by the BBC... I won't comment on them, just let you read and judge for yourself. I am tempted to get the document via FOIA myself though.

Some poll results regarding the wiretapping.

Piece of crap hardware

So recently, we spent a LOT of money building two almost identical machines.

One of them was to be the server. For 6 months now we have been trying to get the damn thing running -- only to find out that likely some of the new memory is defective.

And then tonight, all of a sudden, the workstation completely died. Won't even boot anymore.  The couple times it almost booted it locked up during BIOS (ie: before Windows) -- once even giving us a very nice impression that the BIOS is fried.   So, looks like machine two has either a defective motherboard or defective CPU. Great. Just friggin great.

I am so sick and tired of always debugging this crap. What ever happened to hardware being reliable?  Our old server's hard drive didn't give out until being used 24x7 for 12 years -- and now we can't even keep new hardware running for 6 months (assuming we get it running at all).

Maybe we need a law like Germany where these manufacturers would be required to buy this shit back if we aren't satisfied with it. Maybe then they would get their act together.

WILL POWER!
They don't have to take it back if you don't like it? That's retarded. Let's get it on the ballot.

When I was working at Jefferson Public Radio, we were broadcasting NPR and I overheard the story of a new German law that went into effect at that time. Basically, consumers were allowed to decide that they no longer wanted the product (might have been only vehicles) up to 10 years after purchase and the manufacturer would be required to  buy it back. Because of that, car manufacturers in germany started making better products to ensure that the consumer wouldn't want to sell them back.

I got ahold of AMD tech support. They said that either the CPU or the Motherboard is fried.  Looks like I got to do some hardware troubleshooting to figure out what hardware to replace :(

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

Damn social sites

Ok, there was LiveJournal, but it was annoying cuz it was (for the most part) just a blog.

And there was Friendster, but it was too damn slow.

And there were many others, but none of them seem to matter for long.

MySpace just keeps crashing or saying things are disabled or....  and it isn't nearly as easy to browse through past blogs as other sites (like Blogger)... and they REALLY screw you over when it comes to customizing your site (not allowing & sign or javascript in your CSS for example)....

We've been hoping that Google would pick up the slack... but their Orkut service is also running ASP. Maybe that's why they haven't made it a bigger deal.

And I heard that TagWorld are spammers....

So, what does that leave us?

I think that once we have our server running again, we should design our own. Worst case scenario would be that not many people would use it. Best case scenario, Google would pay us to let them host it and hire me to work on it.

So, what kind of features does it need that these others don't have?

Complete customization control -- ie: XHTML+CSS but NOT like Blogger where it requires rewriting everything from scratch to change one CSS element.

Ajax -- I want to be able to drag'n'drop to make changes to my profile instead of submitting them to see what they look like.

Free

Hosting of content. We can give people a limit (500MB?) but should not limit it to something like 12 pictures. That's just stupid for a social network. We would have to make sure that people are responsible for their own content.

Ability to link to friends who are on other services... So, in your Friend's list, maybe some would show as MySpace, some Friendster, some TagWorld, etc...

New modules/plugins should be easy to obtain. If someone writes a music player that will do playlists, make it something that can be drag'n'dropped in a page editor.

So some of you may be thinking that I am stupid for posting this -- that someone like MySpace of Orkut may see it and beat me to the punch. Good, then I would have a worthwhile service to use without having to waste my own time writing it. More power to them.

Sylkwyrm

TagWorld seems to have nice features, but I am leary about trying it since there are so many reports of them spamming people.

Besides, none of these sites supposedly "allow" adult content (though I have seen quite a bit of it)... maybe I should move to one that does.

Taking a quick glance at this article shows some interesting research...

Ryze evidentally show you the links between you and other people... which is much better than how MySpace says someone with no friends (not even Tom) is in your extended network. Also, it allows you to set rules for who can see your contact information. That is kinda kewl.

Tribes, according to the article, doesn't allow much personalization and is mostly just groups [myspace terminology].

LinkedIn is strictly for professional use - can't even add pics.

Friendster... well, we've all tried it and not stayed.

Today's Net News

It appears the government is taking Google to court for trying to protect your privacy.  If they loose, I imagine Google will remove the "Personalized Search Results" and quit caching what you searched for...  Personally, if I was them, I would make my logs roll daily or something so that the oldest logs that could be supoena'd would be todays.

In other news, the XPrize has some cash available to you if you can decode the DNA of 100 people within a couple weeks.

Looks like the newest hacker trend is to install backdoors into your BIOS which then wouldn't even matter what OS you are running. Very interesting - and disturbing.

If you are looking for a music label for your music, here's one that is fighting the RIAA.

Once again, the RIAA is trying to invent new laws. In this case, it gets kinda stupid because according to them, if your CDRom drive is shared; and you put a CD in (and don't make a copy) you are breaking copyright law.

News from the Net

First, some hypocrites... MPAA admits to unauthorized movie copying. Ok, so get this. This guy makes a movie that is about to show at the Sundance Film Festival called "This Film is Not Yet Rated" about how the MPAA is full of double standards. He sends a copy to the MPAA and specifically requests that they not make copies. They tell him how his films confidentiality is their biggest priority -- then procede to make copies for their employees!

Second, Diebold is in the news again. The state Division of Elections has refused to turn over its electronic voting files to the Democrats, arguing that the data format belongs to a private company and can't be made public. Let me just make it easier on them -- These require the GEMS software to decompress them from the Diebold "gbf" format. They can be examined and manipulated in Microsoft Access after they are decompressed.  More information can be found here.

This study did a study of the brain and found that both democrats and republicans were adept at ignoring the facts -- specifically, the reasoning centers of the brain were not activated when they were presented with evidence that contradicted their party views. Guess it is a good thing I belong to neither party :)

With my recent foray into looking for new employment, I found this article  about Google interesting :)

It appears that they have finally modelled HIV and possibly even found a way to prevent infection.

And this one is for Layne. It appears that IBM is working on a better speech engine that, among other things can translate live broadcasts real-time. They specifically mention subtitling Arabic broadcasts into English on-the-fly.

Meningococcal?

As I listen to another report of a meningococcal death locally on the news, I have to wonder -- has anyone else noticed that all of the deaths were shortly after arriving at the same hospital?

If I ever get it, do NOT take me to L.E.

Well, the comment on the news this morning was that they were "closing" the parks at 9pm and the police would start arresting anyone who was there.

They didn't mention walking through versus loitering... It is possible they only mean loitering... but since it was a change last night / today, it is also possible that they would consider it trespassing if they are "closed".
